I got the vintage bug around 2007, when my '90s Sony components started failing, and build some decent systems while that gear was still super cheap. and yet clearly doesn't have the gear to do his large collection justice. Dude lives for music, buys records all the time, etc. That said, I just had a conversation with a friend who has had the same mass-market amp and speakers for 30 years, certain functions failing, who had also never changed the stylus on his low-end turntable. I'm definitely a music lover first, I mean waayyyy first: I'm closing in on 20K records and CDs in all sorts of genres. Imagine all the wonderful music I'm missing out on. At the same time I won't listen to modern compressed fatiguing recordings. Makes me shudder to think how much wonderful music he's missing out on. I know an audiophile that won't listen to mono. Hell one of them has a $4,000 record cleaner and like 60 records. At the same time I always enjoy getting together with them. When I told him I was 48 he seemed kind of baffled why I mostly like "old" music Then he picked a modern super dynamic recording with pumped up artificial bass that surely made the bass shine. Last visit one of the guys said "how old are you? " after I played a Steely Dan song (shockingly not from AJA). It's more exciting to me to discover a new artist than a new DAC. When it's my turn to pick a song I try to pick something they may not have heard before. Last get together the guys wife said "please don't play that one damn song again" and her husband knew what song she was talking about. When we get together I'll mostly hear the same groups of songs. I recently joined a group of local audiophiles and my impression is they are more about the gear than the music. There does seem to be a cool factor in saying things like "it's all about the music for me." Since I'm obviously cool, it's all about the music for me. But if you want to be cool always say you are about the music first. So I was a gear head until I built the perfect system.īeing a gear head and music first fan are not mutually exclusive. And they don't really want to own any other brand of speaker. When I visit the Klipsch forum I find a bunch of brainwashed fanboys that worship at the altar of Paul Klipsch. Any gear I buy going forward is just out of curiosity or as a replacement for something that breaks. So here I am with a perfect system for me. My cables are good and I'm not willing to spend more on them. And my sources are balanced and high quality. I've also found the perfect amp for them. They aren't perfect, but they just make me happy when I listen to them. Sometimes you just find your perfect speakers. I've learned that I've reached that stage myself. I think there can be a final point in the system building stage for some people.
